Phonics at Barnsole

At Barnsole Primary School, phonics is taught through a systematic and structured programme to ensure all children become confident readers and writers.

We use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to deliver engaging daily phonics lessons. Children learn to read by linking sounds (phonemes) with the letters that represent them (graphemes), and to recognise the different phonemes and graphemes they will encounter when reading and writing.

Phonics teaching begins in Nursery and follows a clear, carefully sequenced programme that builds on prior learning as children move through the school. This structured approach helps children develop secure phonics knowledge and gives them the confidence to tackle unfamiliar words independently.

In Reception and Year 1, phonics learning is reinforced through regular practice reading sessions once children are ready. During these sessions, children apply their phonics knowledge to develop decoding skills, build comprehension by talking about what they have read, and practise prosody by reading with fluency, expression and an appropriate pace. These sessions support children in becoming confident and increasingly fluent readers.

Phonics strategies are also applied in writing, both within phonics lessons and across the wider curriculum. A strong focus is placed on developing spoken language, as speaking and listening are essential foundations for reading and writing in all subjects.

Regular assessment helps us identify any children who may need additional support with phonics. Where needed, pupils take part in keep up phonics sessions led by trained staff, with catch up support provided if required. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SEND resources are used to support children who need a more tailored approach.
