Year 1
Academic Year 2025 - 2026
Spring Term Topic - Bright Lights, Big City

In the Bright Lights, Big City topic, your child will learn the story of a local landmark. They will learn about the countries that make up the United Kingdom, including their location, capital cities and some of their physical and human features. They will have the opportunity to do map work, using compasses and positional and directional language to plan routes around London. They will research the cause and impact of the Great Fire of London and look at some famous London landmarks. They will learn about other capital cities around the world, including Kuala Lumpur, and compare how they are similar and different to London.
Knowledge Organisers
Each of our termly topics has a knowledge organiser. These are created to support our curriculum projects. They set out the key facts and information that children need to use and remember as they progress across the curriculum. Each knowledge organiser includes:
• Essential facts about the topic, laid out in easily digestible chunks.
• Key vocabulary, technical terms and their meanings.
• Ambitious levels of literacy including a topic glossary.
• High-quality images including maps, diagrams and photographs.
• Timelines and significant dates where appropriate.
• Famous quotations, if relevant.

Glossary & Word Mats
We also have word mats and a glossary which complement the knowledge organisers. These contain vocabulary which links directly to the current topic. This vocabulary is regularly referred to during lessons, which we also encourage the children to use during discussions and in their writing.
