Year 2

Topic - Autumn Term 2022

Lead Teacher: Miss Long

Maths - We will start this term by revising our counting skills from last year and exploring how to count forwards and backwards up to 100. We will then apply this understanding to place value to compare the values of tens and ones in a number. After this, our learning will continue by exploring addition and subtraction using a range of strategies to build up to using formal column method for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. We will apply out learning from this term by considering money, comparing values, finding the difference and using our problem-solving skills to find solutions.

English Writing - At the beginning of the term, we will use fairy stories to link to our topic around building structures and towers. We shall write instructions on how to build a house inspired by The Three Little Pigs, and letters of complaint based on Rapunzel and Three Billy Goats Gruff. Later in the term, we will use Anthony Browne’s The Tunnel as inspiration for our own portal stories. If we are able to visit a real castle, we plan to write diary entries to reflect on our day out.

Topic (Geography, History, Art and Design Technology) - This term, we will learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time. Using a wide range of materials, we will build models of castles and test the strength of our structures. Maps and photographs will help us learn about the tallest buildings and the longest tunnels in the world. We intend to find out about the amazing Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. If we are lucky, we may even get to visit a castle ourselves! At the end of our project, we will display our amazing structures and share our knowledge and learning.

Science - For this first term, we will learn the names and uses of everyday materials. We will find that materials can be shaped in different ways to make them more useful, test how materials can be shaped and whether they will return to their original shape. We shall learn that the properties of materials mean they can be used in different ways and that objects are made from materials that have suitable properties for their purpose. We will find that objects can be made from one material or more than one material and that the same object can be made from different materials with similar properties. Our investigation skills will be developed when we learn about paper and test the properties of different paper types. We will also find out about recycling and sustainability.

RE -  The focus religions for this term are Judaism and Christianity. We will learn about the importance of Hanukkah, the Festival of Light, and how events held during the celebration help remember the story of the Maccabees. In Christianity, we will also look at the celebration of Christmas and traditions that Christians have. We will focus on the significance of Advent and how this links to the coming of baby Jesus.
